how can I get windows 8 desktop icons to look right - they are usable but are nearly greyed out - difficult to read. also the clock on the task bar at bottom of screen is same way - white letters on grey background. can anyone help?

Are you sure the proper video drivers are installed? Check the device manager under "display adapters" by right-clicking the bottom right hand corner and selecting device manager from the menu
