How can I improve performance for Skyrim? Please Help.

Okay, I just got Skyrim for my laptop. I can only play on normal settings with no lag. If I go any higher to High or Ultra performance then its just a mess. I don't understand. My laptop should be able to run on at least high and be smooth.
Can someone please help me improve performance or help me understand or something. Or even if my laptop isn't good enough. Thank you.
My laptop has:
-2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7 267OQM.
-4GB RAM.
-750GB Total storage.
-15.6" Widescreen display.
-2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GT610M.
-Windows 7 home premium (I'm not sure this matters).
-6 Cell battery.
Sorry I'm not that good with computers.

Good gaming laptops cost MANY thousands and even then are worse than an average Pc..

You'd see a recognizable increase in performance if you stacked up on RAM, getting another 4GB; if your laptop accepts 4GBs per slot, that is. Other than that there's not much else you can do, aside from decreasing graphics settings.

Play it on medium and be happy. Your laptop's GT610M is far from what is needed to play the game on Ultra.

If I were you try selecting medium settings, set AA to off, AF 4 samples, then click advanced.

Detail tab check mark FXAA

View Distance tab max these settings out but set "distant object detail to low and check mark "object detail fade.

Lower view distance settings if you have lag until it goes away or try lowering resolution.

EDIT: make sure you're playing iwth your laptop plugged in. Most laptops by default are set to lower max computing power while running off just the battery.
