Hey so i have this old pc on my house a compaq presario 900. I want to install linux there because there is no operative system. I have 2 pc one with a usb only and the compaq that also as usb but it only boots with a cd. My question is how can i install a operative system there. Right now i have the operative system on a usb but now i dont know what to do.
I can also use the pcs of my school that have both so i could transfer what is on the usb to the pc but that would be annoying.
I have an empty disk with 8gb and also a usb with 8gb that only has the operative system.
Thanks :)

Use PLOP boot manager, burn a Plop.iso into to a CD/DVD and burn Linux into the USB. Now Insert the Disc with PLOP and the USB with Linux and turn on the Laptop, now the laptop will boot into PLOP where you will see an option to boot from USB. (if it does not boot into Plop you might need to choose manually from boot menu)

First up it may not be worth doing except as a learning exercise.
You only have 256MB RAM so that is really going to restrict what you can do.

These days the minimum spec is 512MB to run a modern linux.
So you will need to look at a lightweight distribution.

Pick one and burn an .iso image to a cd then boot from that disk

.

There are so many Light weight Linux distros that only need 256 MB of RAM or Less. You can do some basic office stuff like word, powerpoint and excel and some light browsing and so many other basic stuff. You are doing this for free and takes less than 10 minutes to setup, it is better than nothing though.
