I've been given a screwdriver set at work, intended to repair PCs and laptops. I noticed some of the heads are JIS while others are Philips. I learnt that JIS is intended for Japanese devices?.
How can I know (if possible at mere sight) if a screw is Philips or JIS? Such as in a Toshiba or Sony laptop, which are Japanese.

Any advise much welcome.

Solution
in laptop screws I have never seen a small screw strip even with threadlock installed.
JIS is for machinery, Motorcycles, tractors, you know big screws.
phillips are rounded at the inside corners, JIS has hard 90 degree angles on the screw.

"JIS screws are most often identified by a dimple or an X on the screw head: "

Does one of the bits fit into the screw head?
If so...close enough!

These JIS screwdrivers lock into the Philips screws, but I heard you can easily strip them. Thanks Judicious for your answer. So it seems I won't find any of these JIS screws on laptops. I just won't use these JIS then. Cheers. I'll wait a bit more for answers though.:)
