• First you have to know specs of the hardware, you're going to put the ram in.

Motherboard model name or​

laptop model name, if that's a laptop.​

• Then you find compatible ram type and form factor. For example DDR4 SODIMM for laptop.
• Find supported ram frequencies. Check cpu specs for that (ark.intel.com or www.amd.com).

If motherboard supports ram overclocking, then higher frequencies for ram can also be used.​
