Question How can I know whether this 8GB RAM stick is 1Rx8 or 1Rx16, or something else ?

I have a pre-owned 8-GB DDR4 RAM stick, which is a single-rank memory with eight chips on one side and no chips on another side. I have never used it. How can I know whether it is 1Rx8 or 1Rx16 or something else? I found the following screenshot on ebay.

R is rank or how many sides chips are on. The 8/16 is size in gb

So that stick is 1r x 8

Correct, I did not say it meant that.

1r means single sided and 2r means chips on both sides.

The 4/8/16 etc means total ram on the stick. It can be divided up how it wants but the meanings stay the same.

You have single sided 8 gb ram. Hence 1r x 8

2r x 16 would be a 16 gb stick with chips on both sides. 1r x 16 single sided 16 gb stick and so on.

How the chips or what sizes are on it does not change this description at all

You are wrong. Memory rank is a term that is used to describe how many sets of DRAM chips. It does not refer to how many sides. For example, "4R" does not mean the memory has chips on four sides, as no memory has four sides.

You are wrong. “x4/x8/x16” refers to the width of memory rather than the total RAM.
