My parents just moved into a new place so I am trying to set up their computers and system there. Here is my dilemma, hopefully someone can instruct me because I have think what I want to do is possible. For starters they both have Win7 Home Premium on both of their computers. For some reason my dad's job is nothing that requires security his office provides him with home internet service, even though they have a separate home "residential" internet service from the same provider. His computer is his and does not run any software from his company and can play with settings anyway he likes FYI. Anyway, my mom's printer got broke in the move and he has a nice enough all-in-one and while she does not do a lot of printing I would like to link her computer up to his printer. If they were on the same network I would think it would be fairly easy to do but while in the same house and getting service from the same provider they are on separate networks, His desktop computer is hard wired into his router and so is his printer. If they were on the same network I would assume it would be easy enough to share the printer on his computer but I just HAVE to think there is a way to do this.

HELP!!

considering you can buy a cheap printer at walmart for $40-50, i'd not put all the effort into buying and setting up a print server just for the occasional printing.

other option is to simply put whatever you wish to print onto a thumb drive and move it to the work pc and print from there. should not be much trouble for basic home use.

honestly both of these options are better options than a print server set-up and maintanence. you'll spend more getting it going than simply buying a cheap printer for mom to use or a thumb drive to move files.
since it is 2 different networks, to share it, you have to go through a print server to enable internet printer sharing. i don't know of any other way to do this across separate networks.

there may be software than can do this from one machine but i don't know what it might be. never tried it without a print server in the mix.

Without a print server, no.

You MUST have access to the local network a printer is connected to, or the printer must have it's own local network that you can connect to, otherwise you must be directly connected to the printer. There is no other two ways about it.

Again, my parents are in their early 70's and do minimal printing and I don't want to spend much here. What should I expect to pay for a simple print server? Can someone provide a link to a specific model/deal you would recommend?

What I do in this situation is email it between systems.

My work laptop has minimal connection to the rest of the LAN. No printer, no access to the NAS.
If I need to print something on it...email it to one of the other systems and print from that.
If necessary, Print to PDF first, and email that.
