How can I reach the full potential of the BenQ XL2730Z?

I'm planning on upgrading to a better monitor, and I have my sights set on the BenQ XL2730Z. It's 2560 x 1440 (2K) and has a refresh rate of 144Hz. A friend of mine said that you would need a powerful graphics card to actually use the monitor at it's full potential, and I was wondering, what card would that be, or is mine good enough (GTX 980)? the gpu will be able to do that. In fact, a gtx 970 can reach the full potential of your monitor easily, not to mention your 980
