How can i retreive important data(urgent)

i have a portable samsung hard drive,when i connect it to the usb it tells me i need to format it before i can use it,i have alot of important photos on this drive i need to retreive,is there some software that can recover this data,if i take it to a computer store can they help me,i need some help with this problem,any help is much appreciated..thanks

Hello mrclownface,

1. Try Recuva. If this doesn't work, do the following.
2. Boot from Ubuntu CD - no install is required. Hopefully your Data would be visible in Ubuntu and you can recover it.

Yes, Ubuntu is a good Linux based Operating System - pretty reliable and I have used it quite a few times.


Edit: Ubuntu can be run from CD and no install is required, as already mentioned above.

Just do quick format. Then use 'recover my files' to recover your data. It can recover all type of file.I use it for 2 years and i newer lost my need data. Hope that helped

I used Disk Doctors Digital Media Recovery 2 years ago to recover images from a hdd which was partially formatted. It didn't recover all of the images but it recovered most.

If it was my drive and it had vital data on it that I couldn't risk losing I'd do a sector-by-sector copy to another hdd as a backup before trying anything. Some recovery apps are invasive and write changes to the drive.

i have installed (recover my files)are you sure i should format the drive before i can recover files??
