How can i stop my screen going blank after i have conected vga bable to tv

Hello,
I have been trying to connect my laptop to my panasonic hd tv. When i have vga cable connected to both tv and laptop my pc screen goes blank and also tv is blank. Please any ideas to help me. Is there a icon where screen options are available.
