With Windows2k Pro, SP3 and SP4, a file called winupdate.exe
attempts to run every boot up. I have automatic updates turned off, and so I ended up deleting this file (also because for some reason nod32 detects it as a spybot.bh worm). Now that I've deleted it, Windows keeps giving me an annoying error msg saying it couldn't find winupdate.exe when trying to run. How can I turn this off?

I don't have Win2k but if you say they run on every boot they might be in the startup tab under msconfig (that's how it's called on XP and I think that also on Win2k)

I had a much better usertitle but was caught trying to hack me a better one so I got my current title as a punishment

svol: The problem is that even though I had it off it still kept trying to run :S...

ytoledano: Unfortunetly Win2k Pro (SP4) does not have msconfig like in XP.

Toey: Hmm reading the first link, I did try deleting that registry entry but it didn't work. I noticed I had 2 other similar entries and deleted those as well...problem seems fine now! Strange if it really is a worm, as I don't know how I could have gotten it...I just did a fresh install and only went on the net to google-> nvidia+creative labs website to get driver updates and already had sp4 on CD. The two progs (av+firewall) aren't warez files either.

You can get a version of MSCONFIG (from an early beta of WinXP) that will work in Win2K here:

Or you can pick up something like Startup Control Panel, which is a nice addition, and my personal preference. It will let you remove Registry entries without deleting them entirely, just in case something turns out to be necessary at a later date.

if you add msconfig to your windows root\system32 folder then everytime you type start/ run /msconfig it will open msconfig just as in winXP and 98...
