In my 2008 dell desktop the original HDD died a year or two ago so I replaced it and reinstalled Win XP from my original CD, but it is only SP2.

It still runs fine for my needs except that I recently purchased a new printer that is asking for SP3 as a minimum, so the printer software will not install.

Am no geek so not sure what, if anything, I can do. Tried a few things but got blue screen and had to restore system to previous day which was a bit scary.

Have just found site.... https://computerworm.net/gold-xp-2016-v2 but don't know if this might be a solution for me. Some ppl seem to be trying to keep XP alive and well. I don't want to end up killing the computer trying to update it.

Thanks for any advice.

Get SP3 from here: http://filehippo.com/download_windows_xp_service_pack_3/
I wouldn't recommend downloading that, it's just a pirated version of Windows XP filled with useless bloatware. Windows 7 is not free.
Hi Paladin,
Is windows 7 free these days? If so, would be grateful to know where I can get it.

Unfortunately the microsoft update link is dead, instead of any download all you get is .... "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found."

I'd still appreciate to know what others think of my thought of trying the following program ....

You can also get SP3 through Windows Update. Just turn on automatic updates in control panel or go to start -> all programs -> Windows Update (Might also be called Microsoft Update). Although M$ removed the download from their website, you can still get SP3 through automatic updates.
