How can I Upgrade PC Resolution to 1080p

I have just received an HDTV as a present and I would like to connect my PC to the TV but I do not have a 1920 X 1080p resolution option on my PC to match the TV’s resolution. My laptop is Toshiba Satellite model #A215 – S7411, with a Vista operating system. What do I have to do or purchase to upgrade my PC, if it is possible. Thank you.

Is it worth buying a VGA cable and hooking it up to the TV to see if the TV's native 1080p will over ride the laptop's resolution?
