I'm finding it impossible to upgrade to IE8 on my XP Pro machine after I did a repair install of Windows. Has anyone figured out how to do it yet???

I followed this page to the tee and no luck. Appears I may have to start looking at upgrading my system. Wish I could solve this problem. I'll bet Microsoft has now made it impossible to install IE8 on an XP 32bit machine. Many of my programs won't work without IE8 installed... 🙁

"Internet Explorer could not install because you computer failed to install a required update. Please click on the Download button below to manually install the update."

So I click on the "Download" button and I get this message:

"Setup could not start your default web browser."

My default web browser is Firefox...

Same problem. I do what you say to do here but when I go back in and double check to see which browser is being used, the "Use My Current Browser" is checked and not "Internet Explorer". By the way, I've unchecked the "Make sure Firefox is the default browser" in Firefox....just so you know... 😉

Now what?????? Thanks!

That is not a "problem", it is proper behavior. Now launch IE, browse to "windowsupdate.microsoft.com", use the "Custom" button and make sure to install ALL available "High Priority" and "Software, Optional" updates (with the exception of the "Live" stuff, "Security Essentials", and "Hardware"). Once you have satisfied all of the prerequesites IE8 will appear as an update.

I get this error message "The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context." when trying to get to "windowsupdate.microsoft.com".

???????

Ok. I unistalled bad installations of IE8 and IE7 and then did another Windows Repair Install. Now when I try installing IE8, I have to go get a required update because like before, IE8 is failing to install. So now when I click on the "Download" button, IE6 opens up and it takes me here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18

This is were I'm at now. And it's really pushing that I get a newer computer. Like I've said before, I don't believe microsoft is allowing me to upgrade my IE6 to IE8. Any suggestions??? Thank you!

If I try to go to this page, windowsupdate.microsoft.com, I get this:

"The page cannot be displayed

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error

I tried the suggestions but still get the error. Now what?????????????

The redirected URL gives the same message. How do I install/repair my NIC driver???

Also, when I enter this URL into Firefox; http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

I get this...

"Thanks for your interest in getting updates from us.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.

If you prefer to use a different web browser, you can obtain updates from the Microsoft Download Center or you can stay up to date with the latest critical and security updates by using Automatic Updates. To turn on Automatic Updates:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off."

Also, I'm finding out IE6 is having problems accessing other URL's as well.

I'm going to uninstall my NIC driver, do a reboot and see what happens...

When going to this URL http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads using Firefox, it says

"Time to upgrade

Support for Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014. In order to upgrade your browser, you’ll need to first upgrade your system.

Find out how"

Using Firefox, I was able to download this file "WindowsXP-KB932823-v3-x86-ENU.exe" from this URL https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=18 and after installing it, the installation programs for IE7 and IE8 do not immediately fail to run. They now go through their paces but at the very end of the installation, they fail to install. A reboot is required to undo the failed install and I'm back to square one.

So now I've just installed SP3 and lets see where this may take me today/night...

After installing SP3, I received a bunch of updates to install including IE8. All updates installed except IE8...of course. Any other suggestions ex_bubblehead???

By the way, if I had to do life all over again, I'd make a career in the Navy serving on submarines. When I was around 9 or 10 years old, I ordered a "real" 2-man submarine that was listed in the back of a comic book for only $20!!! I saved and saved my pennies to get this sub and now 47 years later, I'm still waiting for it to arrive at my doorstep. I have a feeling that IE8 for XP may be taking me down that same road once again... 😉
