Hello! I'm looking to convert my Oblivion game saves from the 360 to PC.

I looked up a couple of tutorials from various sources but all of them seemed to be different, and some people commented that it works while others say it didnt work at all. I have very little experience in modifying game saves and I never converted a game save to a different platform before.

I dont want to go and try this myself...might lose my game-save! So if someone could direct me to a tutorial they KNOW is legit or perhaps create one, I would be very grateful!

My 360 save if from the Xbox GOTY edition, and my PC copy will most likely be the GOTY Deluxe edition on Steam.

(and yes I asked this question on the Bethesda forums but it was swiftly locked because it falls under "hacking/cheating", apparently)

Solution
THe save has to be saved to a USB thumbdrive and brought over to the PC -- You will not lose the save if you make a backup copy of it just in case.

Once you have the save on the USB drive you will need a program called MODIO which will let you open the 360 save game file and extract the save data then you just rename it with the proper extension for the pc and it will work fine on the PC (the harder part is going back to the 360 with a PC save (since you need to import the file data to an existing 360 save and resign the security code into it so the 360 will allow it to be used)

I wrote up a short tutorial on doing it awhile back and posted but not sure if it is still available - Let me look for it and I'll repost a link if I can...

EDIT :
OK found the old 4shared post with the writeup -- http://www.4shared.com/document/-aWJghyN/Repairing_A-Bomb_Bug_on_Xbox_2.html

Note : this was done in order to fix the animation bomb on someone's save game and reload it on his 360 so you will not need the entire process just the first portion on getting the save onto the PC.

It should get you through the process - though some specifics may have changed in the 2+ years since that was done. If you run into problems with downloading the tutorial or with the process. Upload a copy of the save file and PM me a link to download it and I'll see what I can do with it.

Thanks for the help! It took a little while to figure out Modio's new interface, but that solution worked! I'm now playing my character with no issues, it was alot easier than I thought! :D

Couple more questions though, if you done this yourself did you get a message telling you some content could be missing? I checked in-game if all the DLC's (quests, locations, tomes, horse armor, etc) and they were all just how I left them. Probably not an issue, just wondering if I'm the only one.

And do you know if this method works with other games? Be it other Bethesda games (like Skyrim and Fallout) or any other Xbox 360/PC game? :)

Glad you got it working -- Whether it will work on other games really depends on the game and how it was ported to the various systems -- with most Bethesda games thye are designed on the PC and then ported to the various systems so the save format is actually still the same as it was designed for on the PC and then they add the Microsoft security wrapper around that so it is easy to strip off the wrapper and still have a working save for use on the PC. Other games may or may not be the same.

The message about missing some content is fairly common anytime you add or remove an .esp file (and sometimes if there has been a game update) and since you moved it from the one system to another it is probably just giving the warning - as long as the game loaded and your content is still there not really anything to worry about ( Might keep the original save for awhile just in case you find something missing later - but on the PC it is pretty easy to add things back anyway so wouldn't really worry)
