I have a computer with more than 480 mb of RAM, but I want to dual boot it with windows 8.

Specs: 3rd gen intel i3 (only 1.8 ghz, 3m cache, dual core, 4 threads)

4 gigs of ram

64 bit

dell bios

500 gigs of hdd

hd integrated graphics

usb and 3.0

You cannot, should not, run Win95 directly on new hardware.

First, you will not find drivers for all the hardware like sound, network, or even a USB keyboard and mouse.
Second, it will be full of security issues.
Third, why when you run it inside a virtual machine under Windows 8? I use VirtualBox, and it can emulate older hardware that Win95 can recognize.

95/98 won't run on processors faster than 2.2 ghz due to NDIS problem. Also won't use more than 512m ram (though this won't stop it from running, it just ignores extra ram). Use free VirtualBox as per others advice. Cheers.

I just installed Win98 Second Edition on a 2.4GHz Celeron. WIN98/WIN95 have a problem with Disk Drives larger than 32GBytes, Microsoft has a patch available to fix FDISK to deal with it. Catch 22, the Windows SETUP CD does not have the patch and the computer turned off while copying files. I put a 2GByte drive in, installed WIN98se, ran the patches, and then it would come up with the 40GByte disk as a slave, and could partition and format a 120GByte disk. Tried installing 2GBytes, WINDOWS cold not see any of it and would not start. Real-Mode, Phar Lap extended DOS- saw it. I went back t 256MBytes, will add another 256MBytes. No drivers for the integrated VGA: I will probably disable the integrated VGA and use a TSENG 4000/W32.

It runs WordStar just fine.

Turned out the Syntax motherboard has all the drivers for Win98 with it- so lucked out there.

I will play with a Virtual Box for development of the extended DOS software which runs on an embedded processor. They do not have to run on the development machine, but it is nice for test and debug.

No, but I know there are 3 ways

1. VirtualBox or VMWare (Like all other people said, you wont get an authentical experience)

2. Go on EBay and/or a Pawnshop/Thrift Shop and buy an Old PC

3. Build a PC that can have RAM Technology as DDR/DDR2 (256MB - 512MB is required , 576MB is OK , but I don't recommend using 576MB) , A motherboard supporting DDR2 or DDR , some socket motherboards like S478 or LGA775 Supports DDR2/DDR (DONT GET DDR3) , Pentium 4 (Requires FIX95CPU) , Pentium 3 or below (486 CPU - PIII)
Example:
CPU: Pentium 4 2.6 GHZ-HT 512K 800 FSB S478
M/B: Intel Desktop Board D845GERG2 S478
RAM: 256MB DDR 333 RAM
GPU: NVidia GeForce2 MX 400 32MB
HDD: 20GB IDE HDD (I also heard that 60GB works , I tried in VBox , FDisk-ing it with LDS (Large Disk Support) would maybe use the entire HDD or just 137/120/128GB (Only for OSR 2.1/2.5)
ODD: 16X ODD IDE/EIDE/PATA
FDD: 3.5' Floppy Drive
