[SOLVED] how correct permissions

how do I correct permissions or verify a disk through disk utility?
I run first aid on my WD 4T for my Mac external hard drive connected to my Imac . . .the disk has become read only and when I run first aid it fails to correct the problem . . .I also do not seen anywhere I can click on to verify the disk or check permissions . .
