Note however that there are GTX 970s currently as low as $255, and you might see them even lower after the 1070 launches, which is very soon.

BTW, an R9 290 requires a 550w PSU, and a GTX 970 a 500w. I'm doubting your current PSU is strong enough.

The GTX 970 is about 9% more powerful than a R9 290. A lot depends on what price you get them for as far as bang for buck.

Those are just two unusually low priced examples. The 290 is an older model though, so harder to find.

Your current MB support AMD, so yes, you'd have to get a new MB for the Intel CPU, but it's wise to do IMO, and you can afford it.
