How do I change read only on my external drives

It seems suddenly my external storage drives will not allow me to add new folders they all say read only how do I change this I am using a new Mac

Welcome to the TH Community, @Studiohio!

I'd suggest you go to Disk Utility on your Mac and check how the external HDD appears there. You should be able to test the drive for defects from there. You also have the option to Repair Disk Permissions. I hope it would be available in the options. If not, another alternatives are suggested in this tutorial on how to solve the 'Read Only' issue on externals.
