i have a LGA 775 socket and i wan to buy a new cooler for Xeon X5460, i don't understand how to choose compatibility, i have been told it's about socket and CPU specifically, but no cooler i find on the internet says which CPU it's compatible with, so anyway

Which cooler would be best for X5460?

It's about the CPU due to TDP (thermal dynamic power), which is how much heat can be produced by the CPU. Since the TDP of the X5460 is 120W, you'll want a CPU cooler that is compatible with both LGA 775 and a TDP capacity at or preferably above 120W TDP.

Also, you will need to know how tall of a cooler your case can fit and how much room (if you are looking to purchase a large cooler) is available around the CPU socket so that it doesn't interfere with things like RAM or GPU.

So, knowing your budget and case are two things you can share to help us suggest some good coolers for you. Some coolers are universal or low profile to avoid interference with RAM and GPU.
