How do i connect my laptop to my av receiver

Hello,
i have a toshiba L750 1e8 and i want to connect it to my sony av recever,i bought an optical cable and the little adapter so i can put one end of the cable in to the headphone jack. i got it all conected up but no sound comes out the av recever.i dont know if you cant do it this way or if there is some settings in the computer i need too change. any advice would be very much apprecated. and i thank in advance anyone who can help me with this problem.

Post exactly what you got to connect this and which port you connected to on the receiver.

Did you check the volume control on the headphone jack? What if you use a regular mini audio cable to the stereo with an adapter for RCA jacks?
