How do I determine how much memory my graphics card needs?

There must be an objective way to determine this before spending $500+ on a new graphics card. Any tips or website calculators would be appreciated. Thanks.

Given the number you showed for spending. When talking about dual GPU cards, their effective memory is half what they show. Those cards include: 295, 4870x2, 5870, 590 and the 6990.

Otherwise, what was said above is true, but be aware that all the next generation cards that are coming out at the end of this year or the beginning of next year, will sport 2GB of ram. That may change how much ram future games will take advantage of.
