How do I disable startup programs

You know how,when you install new programs they like to put shortcuts and icons in your taskbar and on the desktop and they also feel like they have a "right" to automatically run in the background? How can I remove all of that stuff so that I don't have to use CTR-ALT-DEL to disable them and therefore dedicate all of my system resources to only those programs that I want to use? Is there some type of trick in Win98se that will do this? Thanks for the advice,luces.

There are two locations which specify startup items.
1) Start Menu->Programs->Startup/ You can drag and drop and delete things from this folder at will.
2) Registry. To control the startup items here, go to Start Menu->Run. Type in "msconfig" (without quotes). Go to the Startup tab and do your selections there.

You can also use "msconfig" from the Run window. On the start up folder tab you can unselect those programs you don't want to run at startup.

Click start/run/type msconfig/click OK/place check in selective startup/take checks out of Process config.sys & Process Auto exec.bat/ take check out of Load startup group items/ Click on startup tab/ Place check in scanregistry and systray/ click apply and OK/restart the computer...
