How do I find the IP address on my desktop pc

[Assistance request]

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 on a Dell T3400

The computer reports it has no internet connection and will not connect through the Ethernet Cable to my router.

I have downloaded and used a repair for the TCP/IP from Microsoft and I still have the problem.

I have looked for an IP address through the command editor: ipconfig & ipconfig -a and it returns no results.

How can I find
a) whether there is an IP address
b) if there is an address, what is it

Go into your control panel/network connections.

Start the dosprompt with command:
CMD

input:
ipconfig
and press enter

If you don't have an usable ip-address you can input:
ipconfig /renew
and yoyr net-card is trying to update

OP said he tried ipconfig and it returned no results. This makes me think of one of 3 things:
1. network card is dead.
2. onboard LAN is disabled in the bios.
3. No network drivers are installed.

Sounds correct
Try Controlpanel/system/devices (don't know exact name in english)
see if you have a LAN-driver installed (ie gigabit network connection or similar)
If you hav the LAN-cable connected to PC and to the router you should have a green or orange LED lighting if hardware is ok.

I thank you for your inputs
The lights do illuminate when the Ethernet Cable is connected
I have just tried ipconfig/renew - still no results
I don't know how to check in the BIOS to see if the LAN is disabled
Any advice please

BIOS depends on your motherboard. During boot, it should say something like F2-Setup or something of the sort. Once in, look for onboard lan or similar and make sure it's endabled. Normally, these are on by default.

You can also check the device manager in windows and see if it lists a network card.
