How do I format my MacBook's hard drive?

I have a late 2008 MacBook running OS X El Capitan v. 10.11.6 and I need help reseting my MacBook's hard drive. I have tried booting my MacBook into Mac OS X Utilities and tried to erase the hard drive but got a message saying that the disk could not be unmounted. Can someone please help me format my hard drive? Thanks.

Ummm, the link is for external drives. I am asking how to format my MacBooks internal hard drive.
