Hello i have just bought an Asus MG279Q 27-inch IPS Gaming Monitor (2560 x 1440, 144 Hz, 4 ms) off amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VH3HO6C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And when i go in to the options at the top right it says that my monitor is running at 60hz how do i change this or to i need to buy a new HDMI cable

When i go on nividia control panel and go to Display > Change resolution i can change it to 1080p, 1920 x 1080 at 120Hz/ but cant find 2560 X 1440, so there for me to get 120hz i have to lower my resolution and i dont want to do that. Can anyone help please.

spec need:
MSI NVIDIA GTX 970
Asus MG279Q
Another benq monitor hooked up at 1920*1080 via Dual-Link DVI to my GTX 970 and I'm running Windows 10
16GB ram

Solution
From the manual that came with your monitor:

Supported modes:

2560x1440
60Hz
88.787kHz

2560x1440(Only for DP)
120Hz
182.817kHz

2560x1440(Only for DP)
144Hz
221.97kHz

Switch to DP from HDMI and you'll be fine...
Sorry for the inane questions you're about to read. Just have to be sure.

Could you try another DVI port on the monitor? (if it has another, some monitors do)
Any chance you could try DisplayPort? (HDMI is not the solution to this problem)
Do you have your drivers setup and cable plugged directly into the 970?

Well, the simple answer is to create a custom resolution. You can then change the refresh rate to 144. I have a 1440 display and 2 780tis, and I can't come close to the fps to get to that refresh rate. I would think you'd need the worlds greatest 970 to get that refresh rate to match your fps. If it were me, I'd try to get the fps to match the refresh rate. I run my monitor(Overlord Tempest) at 72hz, as that is close to the fps my graphics can run. My Tempest will run 120hz, but it's an overclocked setting, and for longevity's sake, and the fact I can't get to 120fps, I run it much lower.

Thank you for all your answers in the box it came with a DP to hdmi mini cable so i took my hdmi out of my asus and put in the Display port to hdmi mini cable and it is now showing that my monitior is now running at what ever i set it as in the control pannle e.g. 2560 x1440 @ 120Hz

What determines to a large khz? Because I had about 402khz, and now i have 127khz, and my pg279q only works on 85hz.
