How do I get my computer to read and write cards?

Hello,
I'm running XP on an Acer Aspire laptop which has an onboard CD slot. The computer doesn't recognize any SD or SDHC card that I insert. It WILL read a card in a card reader plugged into a USB port. How can I eliminate the reader and use the onboard SD slot toread the ds?cars
