I backed up 1TB worth of data from my old hard drive to my WD external HD before I took the old drive out and tried to install it in my new PC, only to finally realize somehow it failed after doing that. I somehow also backed up my new PC onto the old data in my external HD. Some of the old files are there from the old hard drive but a lot are missing. I downloaded and ran a full deep scan using Recuva but I got an enormous amount of files and most of them are labelled as numbers or as something I can't understand. Is there another software I can use that identifies the files or do all these types of recovery programs pretty much do the same thing?

This is one of the main issues with all these data recovery applications.

You get file fragments, and also a LOT of irrelevant files (tmp, etc)

Never delete from source until your copy of backup is verified good.
Never have only one copy of any data.

Chances are those files are gone, and the longer you leave that drive plugged in, the more data you'll be losing. There's no consumer grade software that can magically recover data and while there's slightly better hope sending it to a data recovery lab, there's still a good chance the data is unrecoverable.
