I'm in a very confusing situation. My mac laptop's data was corrupted so the hard drive needed to be wiped, I ordered new mac OS on a USB and tried to install it onto the hard drive. I held Command + R and then selected the USB but a "cancel" sign (a circle with a slash through it) appeared on the screen and then shut off the computer. It does this every time. Both the hard drive and the USB work but i cant bypass the cancel sign. So, i plugged the hard drive and USB into my windows 10 computer to see If I can install MAC OS onto a specific hard drive (The mac hard drive) and then transfer the hard drive back into the mac. Is that even possible?

This indicates either a bad USB (unlikely) or a version that doesn't work with your model of Mac. As you must have bought the USB from Apple you should contact their support to see how to proceed. I suppose it could possibly be a non-functioning hard disk. You say it works, but how do you know, and how did it get corrupted in the first place? And how ca you be sure the USB drive works?

As already stated, you can't do what you require on a PC. Even doing it on another Mac would require that you used an identical model.

(This presumes that you have followed normal troubleshooting procedures and have reset the PRAM/SMC.)
