how do i keep from loosing data on my hard drive after plugging into a mac

my external hard drive was plugged into a mac from a pc now pc can't acess hard drive

Did you make any changes to the drive while it was in the Mac? The Mac should have read the drive without doing any damage, it can't natively write to it so it would not have changed anything on it. That is unless you partitioned or ran any other disk utility function on it.

no it was not used and later it was unplugged

If you plug it back into the Mac does it see your data?

have to find out the mac is not here with me right now

You can try a Linux Live CD or USB in the meantime, if you boot that on your PC it might at least let you see the contents of the drive and even copy the data to another known good drive.
