How do I know if a cooling system fits my old PC?

Hi,

My fairly old computer needs a better cooling system.

MB: Gigabyte p55m-ud2
CPU: Intel i7 860 2.8Ghz

I'm assuming I can't install the newest cooling systems (old sockets or something?), so how do I know if a given system can be installed in my PC or not? What parameter am I looking for?

Make sure any cooler you buy is compatible with your socket: LGA 1156 (fixed typo).
It's not that old, you should have great success.

Your P55 is socket LGA 1156. The mounting holes for LGA 1156, 1155 and 1550 are exactly the same. You can install new heat sinks.

Just search for Compatibility: 1156, 1155, 1550 and you should be ok.
