How do I know the number of graphics cards I want to put?

I am thinking of getting an H97-PLUS Asus motherboard, and for now I am going to add one MSI GTX 970 Graphics card. How do I know the maximum number of graphic cards I can put? I would like to add another in the future.

The number of graphic cards you can install is determined by the motherboard. It should be stated in the board's specifications.

You can do 2 GTX 970s on that motherboard. You find this out by counting the number of PCIe x16 slots on the motherboard. In the case of the H97-PLUS, there is one PCIe 3.0 x16 and one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot. Totaling 2.

While, technically, you could install two GTX 970s into this motherboard, you cannot run them in an SLI configuration as this board does not support SLI. The second PCI-Ex16 slot is wired for an x4 throughput (SLI requires a minimum of x8/x8)

Would the ASRock Fatal1ty h97 Performance motherboard allow me to do this? If not which would be a good one to get.

- 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 Slots
- 3 x PCI Slots

Based on the above the ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Performance board would not be able to use two NVidia Geforce cards in an SLI configuration (but it could use two AMD Radeon cards in a CrossfireX configuration).

Here is a list of motherboards I would consider for your processor and a future SLI configuration. Since you are looking to SLI, I would probably stay away from any Micro-ATX motherboards. Beyond that, it really depends on your budget.
