How do i know what ram goes with what?

How do i know what ram can be put together... I am buying a preowned pc and has 4gb of ram so i would like to upgrade but how do i know what ram will work with the ram already installed? Thanks

If you are adding to the existing RAM then the speed and latency need to be identical e.g. if your exiting ram is 1600Mhz and CAS 9-9-9-24 at 1.5v then ensure the memory you buy is the same, Having the same brand isn't essential but it will help compatibility. Sometimes it can be easier to remove all the existing ram and start again
