How do i know what ram goes with what?

How do i know what ram can be put together... I am buying a preowned pc and has 4gb of ram so i would like to upgrade but how do i know what ram will work with the ram already installed? Thanks

DDR3 needs to be in a kit, so you would generally replace all the RAM with a new kit, not add RAM.

Remember, it's also dual channel, so you need exact matching pairs at least.

Turn off the PC > Remove Side Panel > Carefully Remove Existing RAM. There should be a model number on the side of the RAM which will tell you what kind it is. Use that model # to order more RAM. Just make sure the OS that is in the computer is 64-bit and not 32-bit. If its only 32-bit it will only reconize 4gb of RAM.

You can also look with cpu-z (freeware tool) and look at the "SPD" tab for a partnr,but with an oem pc probably not a partnr which leeds to a set that is sold seperately.Under the SPD tab will it also give info about speed,timings and voltage,probably have to go on that info for adding ram.
