How do I listen to what my external laptop mike is hearing?

i want to listen in realtime on my headset to what my microphone is recording on my laptop. i'm on Windows 7 Pro

right click the speaker / volume icon at the bottom -> recording devices -> select your device -> properties -> Listen and then click listen to this device and adjust the volume.
