how do I make a new thread?

Solution

Raise your hand and say after me... "MY BAD"

The Correct answer is to say "There is a big red button that says "Ask the community" that is used to ask a question you have, establishing a new question thread. There is also a big Grey button within existing threads that says "Post an answer" for those who feel inclined to chime in with their 2 cents, like I just did. The final option on posting an answer or reply is the catch-all, no frills grey "submit your answer'...

P.S. "Discussion" thread? You mean like just say something and then leave? I guess that cuts down on people using quotes eh?

Excuse me? I'm completely lost as to what you're taking offence to.

The red 'Ask the community' button posts a thread; question or discussion (or poll). I'm presuming s/he already knows how to do this, because he has already done it (though you can also do the same thing with the red 'Publish' button at the right, which automatically makes a question thread). My guess is that the question is about what the different types of threads are.

There is no such thing as an answer thread. An answer is a post to an existing thread. My guess is s/he may have meant to write a 'question and answer' thread, which I take to mean a question thread.

A discussion thread would usually be asking for opinions on something, without the option to select a solution. Things like 'What kind of performance gains will Skylake have?', or 'Where do you think BitFenix is going with their new case lines?'. It's not got any definitive answer, and the OP can't really say 'hey, that worked for me, thanks!'.

The post an answer button opens up the full editor (which has an 'Answer' button to submit), and the 'Submit your answer' button submits an answer with the content of the quick answer field.

Oh no, not offended at all. I did also say I may be wrong, and apparently I am less accurate than ever, so yes, I raise my hand and say "MY bad." The question and answers seemed to be missing something. You have just now made a brilliant clarification that leaves no misunderstandings of how the post/answer methods work.

The site has been acting-up lately. Buttons aren't doing what they are supposed to, avatars don't always show, editing tools show up if they want to, and wow, the "500" 'something went wrong' problems were a true plague yesterday, all making what button does what a bit confusing.. yup, my bad. Cheers.
