My CPU is only using 2 cores out of the 4 it should be using and im not sure what to do. If you could guide me to make it use 4 that would be great thank you.

It is not clear if you have 4 threads and want to use 2 , or if you are using two and want to use 4.

If task manager shows 4 threads you have 4 threads.
If task manager shows 2 and your cpu is capable of more, that can be changed.

The number of threads to be used is managed by running msconfig.
Look in advanced options where you can alter the number of threads to use.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect.

What is your cpu?
There is a more esoteric explanation that you may have bent motherboard pins.

You can change the number of cores to be used in msconfig (msconfig --> boot --> advanced options --> number of processors), however beware that it could cause some instability and the problem might be difficult to fix....

I have tried doing that and it still says there is only 2 cores on task manager. The exact same thing is happening to my brother as well.

Can you post your CPU info and a screenshot of task manager, that'd be helpful...

It is strange that your brother has the same problem.

Has this always been the case, or is this a new problem?

One thing to try is to reinstall the motherboard chipset drivers.

Is the bios level of your motherboard current?
CPU-Z will tell you what bios level you are at.

It's not strange if it shows up as 2 cores and 4 threads, since that's how they(all the FX series) do show up.
It is strange if it really only shows two cores.

Well, there you have it.
You are operating properly.
The cpu is actually built with two modules which some call cores.
Each module has most of the parts of a full core, but not all.
Some resources are shared.
Each module will have two threads.
But, windows deals only with threads of which you have 4.
