How do i make my external microphone work for my window vista computer

how do I set my laptop to use my external microphone and headset, windows vista?

Is this Headset just one that plugs straight into your audio in? if so usually it informs you that you have plugged in a new sound device. Sometimes you just have to click on the little speaker in the corner and adjust/un-mute it once its plugged in
