I recently purchased a 500GB external SSD from Samsung. I did this because my current case does not have anywhere to put an internal SSD. Now, I have been looking up tutorial after tutorial on how to make my SSD my boot drive. I tried boot order in BIOS, I tried to install windows on my SSD with an installation media after having cloned my HDD twice with no evail. Is there a way to do this on the desktop or do I have to open the computer up and do something internally?

Solution
There are ways to do it, but it is a really poor performing action. Only used if you need a portable OS.

You don't.

What case is it that does not have internal space for a 2.5" SSD?
Or a recent motherboard lacking an M.2 port?

Based on the machine I'm looking at a simple disk clone.....not an OS clone....should work.

I did have a problem at first where the ext would not boot.
The fix was to update some drivers on my hdd and then clone.
