How do I make my router think my computer is a mobile device.

Hello there,

Long time reader, first time poster here; I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

My parents recently bought a Linksys WRT1900AC Dual-Band+ Wi-Fi Wireless Router, and it's set to disconnect me from the internet at midnight. I'm 18, going to college in less than a month, and a World of Warcraft raider. My raiding team goes until 1AM my time, so the midnight cutoff is quite intrusive.

I noticed the first night this happened that my mobile phone, Pantech Perception, still had access to the internet, and I was able to surf the web and watch netflix, etc.

I tried using an app called fqrouter2 to use my phone as a VPN, but either that didn't work or I was setting it up incorrectly.

Is there any way I could properly use my computer through my phone's wifi (same router) at night or would it be possible to simply trick my router into thinking my laptop is a mobile device?

Thank you for your time,
Edward

Bide your time, or, if your parents have added some rule that's based on MAC ID or something, pick up / borrow a USB wifi adapter and connect that way. (only connect with the wireless from 12:00->1:00 am)

Does your mobile allow you to bridge network connections?

Well the probably used the parental controls in the router settings to disable access to just your computer at 12. The router most likely uses the MAC address of your network card to know that it's your computer and not another. A MAC address is unique identifier set on a hardware level that identifies that network adapter. Even though it is set on a hardware level it could be overridden or "spoofed' using software.

I am merely providing information on how these systems often work, I am not going to give you any instructions on how to actually bypass the parental controls as your parents have put them in place. Google is your friend.

Thanks for the info, I'd like to not spend any money on this since it's only for a month, but if I can't get in wirelessly I can go back to plugging my ethernet cord straight into my modem.

On the last router they had it was set to disconnect all devices on the network at a certain time, but until now I had my own router set up with a hidden SSID.

I'll try spoofing my MAC ID tonight and see if that works, and I'm not sure how to bridge my phone to my computer, but I'll look into that.

The fact that you're 18, or soon to go to college, ot whatever else - you're living in your parents' house, and it is up to them to impose the rules. It was your behaviour which made them put these restrictions. So, instead of trying to find out how to go around the system, you better work with your parrents.

I know a couple of houses where DSL modem goes under the father' pillow for the night, and commuting to works for the day.
