Could someone help me to overclock my amd k6-2 450, what I would like to know is how much faster could it actually go and how to do it, I have a gigabyte 5ax mobo with F2 bios verion. I really do not know how to do it, and if someone could explain it to me that would be awesome,
this is just a testing computer, so if I fry it, oh well.

Thanks everyone

umm...up the multiplier, and you should be able to get it to 550, if the board supports it...
you MIGHT have to up the voltage, but i am not sure...
if you get weird posts, or none at all, then up the voltage in incriments as low as your board will allow...
and...to do all this, there should be jumpers on the board...and there might be a table printed on the board, as to how to set up these jumpers for different speeds...but the cpu might not run at the voltages they print...but it might.......
and the k6-2 450 SHOULD run with no problems at 550, my friend had his running like that until he upgraded...then i clocked it back down to 450, and we put it aside....
you should also be able to do this with the standard heatsink......
alright, i need to go to sleep, last post for the night for me..........eyes closing as i am typing............................

older amd cpus such as the k6-2 are very hard to overclock(at most 100 mhz) and most people have no success at all...and performance wont be that noticable....

The K6-II 450 already has 100 MHz FSB. All you can do is to increase the multiplier and that too by half. That means you can overclock the processor in steps of 50 MHz. With better cooling and a bit of voltage increase (I guess your board will support 2.4V over 2.2V) you run it quite well at 550. If you can increase the FSB past 100, do it before the multiplier change. It will definitely improve the performance because of faster memory.

sorry, but it isnt that hard....they are really QUITE easy to overclock...and performance is noticeable...especially at 100mhz over stock...
i dunno why people say that they are hard to oc...they SUCK...sure...but that is beside the point that they are easy to overclock...
i dunno...maybe the 4 or 5 that i have overclocked dont mean a thing...and all of the people that used them used them for like a year, until they upgraded....

I have a K6-2 380 running at 500MHz at 2.8v! Just make sure you cool it properly, you WILL need a GOOD cooler, I recommend an Athlon/PIII/Duron cooler, and yes, they DO FIT socket 7! I'm using a generic Thunderbird cooler rated at 1.2GHz max CPU speed.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Some are, some arnt, Ive done a lot of k6 2's, my kids 350 is still going happily at 450, though a lot of them struggled to go 50Mhz higher. as for
they SUCK
why do they? you mean they arnt the best cpu available? just coz my car isnt a ferrari doesnt mean it sucks, my kids cpu used to be mine, when a 400 was the fastest around, and the amd was like 1/2 the price of the pentium, its still going fine, and does everything it needs to.

well, the 4 or 5 that i have worked with were quite easy to overclock...like 100mhz...
mine i could only go 50 because my mobo would only go to 550...
in fact, now i got a k6-2 300 sitting on my desk that someone gave me, which i will try out.
i know they werent the worst..
i liked my k6-2.
it outperformed my dads celeron 500...when i had the k6-2 running at 500...
that 100mhz bus was the shiz back then!
and for general use, the k6-2 is working fine for my little sisters computer, and running fine for general gaming for my little brothers computer.
there are a total of 3 k6-2 processors in my house right now.
trust me, i never said i hated them...and when i said suck..i meant they suck for what i do now.
when it comes to rendering something in photoshop...my athlon woops the k6-2...of course it does, it is newer...and wayy faster.
but they in no way really sucked.
sorry i used such harsh words.
