@fkmacmillan: What model and version BT router do you have?

How do I prioritise Ethernet over the wifi when using a BT router?

Solution

If WIFI is a separate box, a smart switch with QOS capability can "discriminate" the port which the WIFI box is connected to.

Op, perfectly good question, unfortunately this is no an easy subject, I can only pass along generic knowledge, and the magic word to me would be QOS.
You can't do it simply. I have not seen a router that has a feature that knows which traffic is connected via wifi and which is connected via ethernet.

Almost all routers that have any ability...you need to check yours...to limit traffic do it either by ip address or by mac address.
