how do i stop my video card from going into power save mode during a game

whenever I play a game my computer goes into power save mode within 20 minutes. I set my power options to always on & never off. i'm using the latest drivers. my computer meets the recommended requirements for all of my games. so, why does this happen, and how can I fix it?

Win7 Home 64-bit
Intel i7-3820@3.6GHz
16GB RAM
1TB WD HDD
Sound Blaster Recon 3D (champ. ed.)
NVidia GeForce GTX 660Ti 2048MB
