Question How do I stream my desktop to my smart TV?

I Googled for an answer but only found solutions using external hardware.
I have a Samsung RU7100 smart TV and there are certain videos I want to play in it, but I can't because there is an error about not supporting this kind of file (a codec problem maybe). I tried both by using a disk on key and streaming the videos from my phone.
Therefore I want to know if I can stream my desktop (wireless-ly) so that I can just play the videos on my computer and it will show on my TV.

I have Windows 10. I tried going to settings -> devices and connecting to my TV from there, but it just says "can't connect to your device".

Is there a software that can do that maybe?
If possible, using something like VLC to stream is also okay since I only want to view videos.

Air Video is free and works flawlessly. I can even stream high definition over WiFi with no problems.

oh yes, sorry. Even though i have a SMART tv, it's pretty crappy as a streamer. You could get a real Roku and see what options you have there. I know you can plug a usb drive into the roku and watch video

if your tv has built in roku, this might be enough, but usually they put the crappiest of crappy streamers in tvs

I bought a Chromecast just for that. Been working great for 4 years now.

Is there no solution other than using external hardware? I thought having a smart TV means I could avoid that.

If all you want to stream are locally-stored videos, you can turn your desktop into DLNA-compatible server (even Windows supports that), and ask your TV to search for DLNA servers. For what I know, Samsung also (used to) offers an application for that.
