My C drive keeps going red, but I have plenty of space on E. I have shrunk E by 20GB, but I cannot reuse the space in C yet, it just shows as free space in the extended partition. How do I make it unallocated or whtaver I need to do to be able to extend C:, the extend option is greyed out at present.

If the unallocated space is not directly after the partition (to the right) Windows Disk Management won't let you extend it.

[C: Partition] [Unallocated Space]
In this situation you could extend C: into the unallocated space

[C: Partition] [Unallocated Space] [E: Partition]
In this situation you could extend C: into the unallocated space

[C: Partition] [E: Partition] [Unallocated Space]
In this situation you could extend E: into the unallocated space but you can't extend C:

Unfortunately the only two ways around this, and neither is ideal.
Option #1
Back up the contents of E: > Delete E: > Extend C: into the space > Re-create E:

Option #2
Use 3rd party software. I can vouch for EaseUS as I used it a few times in the past. Also recommend Paragon Partition Manager. I have the paid version but I believe this free version can do what you require. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/
