How do I transfer mini dv video to my Imac AA1195?

I recently bought my son an old Panasonic AG DVC30 video camera to get his feet wet in using a higher end video camera to do creative movie making. I thought this older camera would work with his older IMac AA1195 computer. I had noticed that the Panasonic AG DVC30 had a 1394 fire wire port, but the owner's manual was vague as to whether it was an output source for downloading video. I purchased a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire and tried to download the video. The problem I am having is his Imac is NOT recognizing the video camera at all.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

The firewire port on the camcorder is used for transferring video from the camera to the computer. What program are you using to try to transfer the video? What mode do you have the camera in when trying to transfer the video? Do you have it in VCR mode when attempting to transfer the video?
