WSC is an integral - and important - part of Windows XP and cannot be turned
off. Why would you want to?

Hi

Try this:

Go to Control Panel>Security Center and click on 'Change the way Security
Center alerts me'. Change the appropriate options in there.

You display a basic misunderstanding of Windows Security Center (WSC).

WSC - an integral part of Windows which cannot be disabled - monitors the
status of your security software. For example, if you have chosen to install
a third party firewall, as I have, WSC will monitor the status of that
firewall. This is true so long as the firewall is compatible with WSC, as
all the major firewalls are by now.

Similarly, WSC monitors the status of your antivirus software and the
availability of updates from Windows Update. For example, I have WSC setup
to notify me when a security update is available at Windows Update.

Since I keep my firewall and antivirus software up to date, the only contact
I ever have with WSC is when the little yellow icon shows up in my tray to
let me know that a security update is available. If not for that, I could
easily forget that WSC even exists.

Remove SP2.

Note: sooner, or later, you will need to reinstall it as Microsoft will make
it mandatory to have it installed to get further updates.

I have a slow dial-up connection so I deactivated the automatic update
aspect, which also removed that gawdawful icon from the system tray.
Got an error notification the next time I went to windowsupdate
(contained three DDDs and ended with 18). The website advice didn't
work, but everything went fine once I went into the Security Center
and temporarily reactivated the function.

I really wouldn't remove Security Center, but it's easy enough to
render it inoperative. Go into Control Panel \SC and look for "change
the way Security Center alerts me".
