How do I unpack a downloaded mod archive into a folder?

I am getting a mod and it is saying to simply unpack a downloaded mod archive into the folder which holds the game. How do I do that?

get an unzipping utility (I use 7zip) and have it extract the files into your game install location. Or, youtube the installation directions.
