I am using a WD My Passport to back up my laptop files but how do I get the folders to only update with the changes since the last back up? I don't want to keep adding duplicates to the HD. Thanks

Solution
You need to change your backup software strategy. What you are describing is a differential or incremental backup strategy. Only the things changed since the last full backup are saved. You do a full (referred to as level 0) backup and then create multiple incremental backups to keep the level 0 up to date. You should redo the level 0 backup periodically to minimize the restore time by minimizing the number of incremental changes that have to be applied.

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, Gypsygirl!

@kanewolf is right about the periodically-set backup strategy. What is the backup software you are currently using with your WD My Passport? If you are using the WD SmartWare 2.0 software, you can try setting up a scheduled backup and then specifying the frequency.
I'd recommend you to refer to our tutorial regarding this in the WD knowledge base. You can also check for any updates of the WD My Passport software utilities, once you select your product.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.
