How do I use a old hard drive as an external hard drive?

I am going to buy a external hard drive casing for a old hard drive. The thing is the computer I am going to backup is an all in one computer so I have to use my computer to format the drive. Here is what I think I have to do.

1. Connect the old hard drive to MY computer (tower)

2. Use disk management to format the drive.

3. Then go and buy an external hard drive case and connect it to the all in one and copy the files I need over.

If the All In One has a USB port, you can skip step 1 and 2.

Just get an external case for it, connect via USB, and wipe/format/use as needed

Id skip the whole part of connecting it to your computer and would just get the external hdd case and copy the files and format it like this.
